Our request:
We, the undersigned, call on the World Bank and the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to maintain a ban on the granting of new logging permits in the rainforest. We strongly believe that the Congo Basin rainforest, second only in size to the Amazon, should be protected for the benefit of traditional inhabitants of the forest and future generations. An announcement by the Government of DR Congo in January 2011 opened the possibility for the lifting of the ban which has been in place since 2002. This could lead to the destruction of 250,000 square kilometers of rainforest including areas already slated for logging. Lifting of the ban would be a major reversal in the fight against deforestation and climate change. We call on the World Bank and the Government of the DR Congo to ensure that the ban on new logging operations is maintained.
